The Lincolnshire Wolds were designated an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" in 1973, and cover an area of approximately 560 square kilometres.
The chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds are situated between the river Humber and the Wash, they offer a peaceful landscape with fine views.
The Wolds were sheep country for centuries but much of the open grassland and hedged fields have been ploughed up for arable farming.
The chalk tableland slopes away from a western scarp above the Witham valley. High plateaux and ridges distinguish the north, rounded hills crossed by winding valleys and narrow ravines predominate in the south. The grasslands and abandoned chalk pits are an important habitat for rare flowers and insects.
The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service
Protected Roadside Verges (PRV) The wide roadside verges of the Lincolnshire countryside are havens for a variety of invertebrates, small mammals and many kinds of wildflowers. Since 1960 there has been a protection scheme.
Mud and stud vernacular cottages were once widespread. Few now survive in anything like their original form. A high concentration of these earth and timber buildings are located in the Wolds at Baumber, Great Sturton, Greetham, Hagworthingham, Harrington, High Toynton, Langton by Spilsby, Little Steeping, Mareham on the Hill, Somersby and South Ormsby.
Mill Hill Cottage at Little Steeping is considered one of the best. This Grade II* listed building is owned by the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire. Recently restored, the cottage won a Civic Trust Award in 2001.
The attractive market town of Horncastle, 4 miles away, is at the foot of the Lincolnhsire wolds, and was once known for its August horse fair, reputed to be the biggest in the world.
Today Horncastle is known for antiques. There are over 60 independent antique dealers in Horncastle, and collectors and buyers come from Europe and the U S.
Roman Horncastle, which was called Banovallum – ‘the walled place on the river Bain’, still has visible remains in its Roman walls, some within the town library.
The Anglo-Saxons called it Hyrnceastre, or ‘the castle in the corner between the two rivers’.
Inside St Mary’s church are reminders of the role Horncastle played in the English Civil War. In 1643 Cavaliers and roundheads fought at the Battle of Winceby, and the 13 scythe blades hanging in the church are said to have been used there.
Sir Joseph Banks, naturalist and patron of science, who travelled with Captain Cook to the South Pacific, lived here. Banks's work as an explorer and botanist was among the most important in the eighteenth century. His principal legacy to us was the founding and stocking of Kew Gardens
